Open/Close Menu Divorce & Family Law - Divorce Mediation

I often get clients who come to me asking for advice on how to obtain a divorce in Connecticut. They ask, “What do I need to do?” They don’t know where to start, because if you haven’t been through it a first time, you don’t have a clue what to do. An important aspect is…

One of the first questions that many prospective clients ask is whether or not they automatically get alimony, also known as maintenance or spousal support. The answer is well, not necessarily. Alimony is awarded many times but it is entirely situational. Here’s an example of a situation in which a person would likely receive alimony payments…

When a person wants to dissolve their marriage in Connecticut, they have a number of options. Of course, they may get divorced. They may choose to become legally separated. Or, they may obtain an annulment. There are two different types of annulments. You can have a religious annulment or you can obtain a civil annulment. Religious annulments are obtained through a religious institution, such as a church. However, civil annulments must be obtained through a court.

Though it is an alternative to a divorce, many people have the misconception that civil annulments are quicker than divorce. Divorces and annulments take about the same amount of time and effort to accomplish in Connecticut. There are several grounds to get an annulment. These include when the parties are not legally married due to a deficiency in the person who performed the marriage, or if one of the parties was already legally married to another person when they got married to a different person. There are a number of other situations that a person can use as grounds to obtain an annulment in Connecticut.

If you have questions as to whether or not you are eligible to obtain an annulment, you should contact an experienced divorce and family law attorney who can help you determine what your options are in this situation.

Mediation has become a very popular method of divorce in Florida and throughout the country. However, not all couples may be able to find success through mediation because they simply cannot get along with each other enough to make the important decisions about their future. The truth is that mediation isn’t for everybody but for…

It is important to remember that during mediation, the mediator does not give legal advice. Having your own attorney is not mandatory for mediation, and it is entirely your decision. However, at the first session with my clients I do encourage them to each go to an attorney. This way they are able to inquire…

When a person becomes a victim of domestic violence, many times they will obtain an order of protection against their abuser. A protective order serves the purpose of keeping an abuser away from the victim so they cannot continue to commit acts of domestic violence against that person again. Domestic violence entails abusive acts by…
